RI-Malaysia border marker on Pulau Sebatik becomes tourist draw

At Desa Aji Kuning, Nunukan, the landmark draws visitors by marking the boundary between two countries on one inhabited island.

The Indonesia-Malaysia border marker in Desa Aji Kuning, Sebatik Tengah district, Nunukan regency, North Kalimantan, became a tourist attraction on Pulau Sebatik on Sunday, July 19, 2026. Residents came to take photos in front of the boundary marker between the two countries standing on one of Indonesia’s outermost islands. Sebatik has a unique character because one landmass is divided between two countries: the southern part is in Indonesia, while the northern part is in Malaysia. Beyond serving as a symbol of sovereignty, the border area has also grown into an educational tourism destination that introduces visitors to the history and geography of the border region.
