Revision of the Election Law again delayed ahead of 2029 polls

UI researcher says the delay stems from efforts to preserve rules that favor elites and avoid political conflict.

Discussion of the revision of the Election Law has been delayed again, even though the law will form the basis for the contest heading into the 2029 polls. Delia Wildianti, a researcher at the Pusat Kajian Politik Universitas Indonesia, cited two main causes: pressure to preserve the regulatory status quo and efforts to maintain political stability among elites. She said the current rules are seen as having produced a distribution of power that benefits certain parties, weakening calls for major change. Delia also said the delay reflects a lack of political will to improve democracy in substantive terms. Earlier, Chairman of Commission II DPR Muhammad Rifqinizamy Karsayuda said his commission had drawn up 28 issues for the revision of the Election Law.
