Ratko Mladic dies at 84 after genocide conviction over Bosnia war

Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb general convicted of genocide and other war crimes during Bosnia's 1990s conflict, has died at 84 in a U.N. prison hospital in The Hague. Mladic was serving a life sentence after his 2017 conviction over the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, where at least 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed after Bosnian Serb forces seized the U.N.-declared safe area. Prosecutors also tied him to the siege of Sarajevo, where shelling and sniper fire killed about 10,000 people. He had been in custody since 2011 after years as a fugitive. The Bosnia war left more than 100,000 dead and displaced over 1 million people.
