Ramaphosa moves to halt South Africa impeachment probe over Farmgate
What's next: A high court hearing on Sept. 2-4 will test his bid to void misconduct findings before parliament proceeds.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa filed an urgent court bid to block parliament from starting impeachment proceedings over the Farmgate scandal. He wants the high court to first rule on his separate challenge to an independent panel's findings that accused him of misconduct in a 2020 theft at his farm. Ramaphosa has denied wrongdoing. About $580,000 in cash was stolen from a sofa at the property, money he said came from buffalo sales, but the case raised questions about why the cash was hidden in furniture and whether it had been declared. South Africa's Constitutional Court revived the impeachment process last month after ruling a 2022 parliamentary vote to stop it was invalid.
