Qatar presses Iran talks to head off possible new US strikes
What's new: mediators floated a two-day plan under which Iran would halt attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz to reopen direct talks.
Qatar is leading urgent talks with Iran aimed at preventing a fresh round of possible U.S. strikes after Tuesday's midterm elections, as Gulf states brace for a wider conflict. Over the past 72 hours, mediators have traveled to Tehran and an Iranian delegation has been in Doha, according to NPR's reporting. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was quoted in state media as saying the effort has not produced a final outcome, but discussions include a two-day arrangement in which Iran would stop attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz so direct talks with Washington could resume. President Donald Trump, speaking at Mar-a-Lago, signaled no immediate move while also saying one or two Iranian sites could be hit quickly.
