Pramono: Suralaya coal plant helps drive Jakarta smog

The Jakarta administration says city limits on emissions are not enough without central action on coal-fired industry in surrounding areas.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo said PLTU Suralaya in Cilegon, Banten, is one of the contributors to Jakarta's air pollution. He said the capital's air quality remains among the worst in the world, so steps inside the city such as expanding public transport and shifting to electric vehicles are not enough to curb emissions. According to Pramono, the problem is not only vehicles but also industries around Jakarta that still use coal as fuel. For that reason, he called for coordination with the central government so emission sources in the agglomeration area can be regulated together. Pramono said Jakarta's public transport connectivity is now 93 percent, while sustainable public transport use has climbed to more than 31 percent from about 23 percent.
