Prabowo targets 100 GW of solar, phases out 13 GW diesel
The government is aiming to build 30 GW of solar this year, while projecting annual budget savings of Rp73,9 triliun.
President Prabowo Subianto is targeting the construction of 100 gigawatt of solar power plants to strengthen Indonesia's energy self-reliance. Under the program, the government will also accelerate the phased shutdown of diesel-fired power plants. This year, the government is aiming to build 30 GW of solar power plants and retire 13 GW of diesel power capacity. Prabowo said the move could save the state budget Rp73,9 triliun a year. He also pushed for energy self-sufficiency at the village level, with an ideal target of each village having a 1 megawatt solar plant. Institute for Essential Services Reform called large-scale solar development a progressive step, but warned the target would require upgrades to the power grid, energy storage systems such as batteries, and financing so it does not remain only an ambition.
