Prabowo closes 290 state firms, cites Rp50 trillion in savings

The government aims to cut the number of state firms to no more than 300 by end-2026, with savings topping Rp70 trillion.

President Prabowo Subianto said the restructuring of state-owned enterprises has saved the state budget about Rp50 trillion in 2026, mainly from cuts to director and commissioner salaries, office rent, car rentals and official travel. In an annual session at the MPR/DPR RI building in Jakarta on Friday, Prabowo said the government has closed 290 state firms out of a total 1,074 companies because they were considered unproductive and a drain on state finances. The government is aiming to leave no more than 300 state firms by Dec. 31, 2026. Prabowo said the savings from the downsizing could exceed Rp70 trillion and be redirected to repair puskesmas, renovate schools and provide homes for residents in need.
