Prabowo asks campuses to bring waste tech to villages

BRIN is preparing waste-handling technology from household to city scale, with some home units said to cost under Rp1 juta.

President Prabowo Subianto asked BRIN and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology to involve campuses in bringing waste-processing technology to villages. The goal is to move technology already developed in laboratories into use by residents at the household and village levels. According to 2025 data from the National Waste Management Information System, waste generated in reporting areas reached 24,8 million tons a year, with households contributing 56.7 percent. Only 34.55 percent is managed properly, while 63.76 percent of waste entering TPA is still dumped openly. BRIN chief Arif Satria said BRIN has prepared technology at four levels, from households to cities. Fast pyrolysis technology, or Faspol, to turn plastic into fuel has been deployed in 84 regencies, while PLTSa Merah Putih in Bantargebang is a pilot facility with a capacity of 100 tons per day.
