PP TUNAS bars children under 16 from risky social media accounts

The government has barred children under 16 from holding accounts on high-risk social media under Government Regulation No. 17 Tahun 2025 on the Governance of Electronic System Providers in Child Protection, or PP TUNAS. Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid said the regulation was drafted to help parents protect children in digital spaces, not to replace parenting. At the Gerak Bersama Anak Indonesia event in Jakarta Selatan on Sunday, Meutya said digital platforms must now apply the principle of safety by design, meaning child protection must be built in from the service design stage. The government is also pushing stronger user age verification. She warned that digital spaces carry risks of addiction, exposure to age-inappropriate content, and disruptions to children’s physical and mental health.
