Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery in Rome after doctors diagnosed him with lung adenocarcinoma, the Vatican said, removing part of his right lung in a 90-minute operation at Gemelli Hospital on Oct. 13. The Vatican and other reports said the surgery was successful and without complications. Leo, 71, is expected to stay in the hospital for about a week as he recovers, and official Vatican events have been canceled through Oct. 20. The Vatican later said he was showing steady improvement, able to work and carry out normal daily activities independently, and was due to appear publicly again on Oct. 18 for the traditional noontime prayer.
