Pope Leo opens Spain trip with migrants, abuse survivors in focus

What's next: Leo plans more than 20 speeches, including Spain's first papal address to parliament and a stop in the Canary Islands.

Pope Leo began a week-long trip to Spain on June 6 with migration, political polarization and clergy abuse at the center of his agenda. The Vatican said Leo will hold a private meeting with survivors of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy during the visit, with details to be released only afterward to protect their privacy. The first U.S. pope is also set to meet migrants in the Canary Islands, a main arrival point for people crossing the Atlantic to Europe. His June 6-12 itinerary includes Madrid, Barcelona, Montserrat and Tenerife, with stops at the Sagrada Familia basilica, a Catholic charity for homeless people and Spain's parliament, which he will become the first pope to address.
