Polri and KPPU probe alleged palm oil fruit price cartel
Kementan is preparing checks on 270-300 companies, while about 70 percent of TBS prices are starting to recover.
Polri’s Food Task Force has teamed up with the Business Competition Supervisory Commission, KPPU, to investigate allegations of a cartel that has pushed down the price of fresh palm oil fruit, or tandan buah segar, at the farm level. The move comes after TBS prices fell in recent days even though global crude palm oil prices have continued to trend higher. Brig. Gen. Ade Safri Simanjuntak, head of the Food Task Force, said the investigation will be carried out with KPPU in Jakarta and in the regions, with support from criminal investigators at regional police units, Ditreskrimsus, in the Polda network. Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman called the drop an anomaly and urged prices to return to the proper level under regional rules. He said 270 to 300 companies that have not restored prices will be inspected. Amran said TBS prices had previously ranged from Rp3.200 to Rp3.600 per kilogram in several regions, and about 70 percent of prices are now beginning to recover.
