Poland, Germany sign new defense pact without mutual guarantees

The deal adds cyber work, a joint Baltic command and military mobility, including German engineering support on Poland's eastern border.

Poland and Germany signed a new bilateral defense agreement on Wednesday in Warsaw as the Polish government seeks to strengthen alliances amid what it sees as a threat from Russia. The document replaces a defense cooperation framework that had been in place for 15 years, but it does not include mutual security guarantees beyond NATO and European Union commitments. Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said the deal opens new cooperation in cyber security, a joint command in the Baltic region, new technologies including space, and military mobility and infrastructure. He also said German engineering troops will support the Polish army in protecting its eastern border.
