Qatar PM goes to Tehran to revive Hormuz mediation
Doha will press for freedom of navigation and a return to prewar conditions as oil flows through Hormuz fall sharply.
Qatar Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani is scheduled to visit Tehran on Aug. 27 to revive diplomatic channels between Iran and the United States. Qatar said the talks will cover conflict de-escalation, freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and restoring conditions to what they were before the war broke out on Feb. 28. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the meeting will also discuss the continuation of Qatar's mediation efforts and regional developments. The visit comes as the war nears its sixth month, military strikes have eased, but no political breakthrough is in sight. Ship-tracking data show oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz fell to 5 million barrels per day on Aug. 24, well below about 20 million barrels per day before the war.
