Malaysia PM Anwar Ibrahim undergoes hernia surgery, 2-day watch

Medical team said the elective laparoscopic operation for a para-umbilical hernia went smoothly, and Anwar has begun physiotherapy.

Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim underwent abdominal hernia surgery on Monday, Aug. 10, and was monitored for two days in hospital. Team leader Asri Ranga bin Abdullah Ramaiah said the procedure was an elective laparoscopic operation to treat a para-umbilical hernia. The medical team said the operation was safe and smooth. After the surgery, Anwar began physiotherapy while remaining under the supervision of specialist doctors to monitor his recovery. Earlier, the prime minister's office had only said Anwar underwent a medical checkup and procedure, without detailing the diagnosis. Anwar turned 79 on the same day. He has led Malaysia since 2022 and previously had several shoulder and back problems.
