Pigai draws a line on Papua demands: welfare yes, independence no

He urged evidence-based advocacy and said proposals for prosecutors in Paniai, Puncak Jaya and Mulia could improve access to justice.

Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai said Papuans may demand welfare, justice and other rights, but may not demand Papua’s independence from NKRI. He made the remarks during a working visit to the Papua Tengah DPRD in Nabire on Monday (17/8) evening. Pigai said claims of injustice remain valid as long as they are pursued through law and the constitution. He called on the public and lawmakers to prioritize advocacy based on facts, data, information and documentation so complaints can be processed through to court rulings. In conflict areas, he also said access to justice needs to be strengthened by bringing law enforcement institutions closer to residents. Pigai said he had received proposals to establish a prosecutor’s office to serve Paniai and surrounding areas as well as Puncak Jaya, Mulia and nearby regions, while stressing the need for lawyers and civil society to accompany residents.
