Philippine quake triggers evacuations in Sangihe, isolating Kawio

In the Philippines, at least three people were killed and a tsunami of up to 1.4 meters was recorded, while homes in Kawio were reported destroyed.

A strong offshore quake south of Mindanao, the Philippines, on Monday morning triggered tsunami warnings and evacuations of residents in Sangihe Islands, North Sulawesi. Coastal residents in Kelurahan Tidore, Tapuang and other beachfront areas moved to higher ground on Jalan Manganitu after the tremor was strongly felt. In Desa Kawio, Kecamatan Kepulauan Marore, damage was reported as more severe: village secretary Risto Mandiangan said many homes were badly damaged or flattened, and all 480 residents from 178 families gathered in an open area. Kawio was also isolated because access to the district capital takes about a day of travel. Antara reported at least three deaths in the Philippines, with tsunami heights recorded at up to 1.4 meters.
