Pew survey finds China favored over US in 25 of 36 countries

What's new: Views of Xi Jinping topped Donald Trump's in 22 countries, including Canada, Mexico and several major European allies.

A new Pew Research Center survey found China is now viewed more favorably than the United States in 25 of 36 countries and territories polled, a first in roughly two decades of Pew tracking global attitudes. The study, released Wednesday, also found respondents in 22 countries had more confidence in Xi Jinping than in Donald Trump on world affairs, though ratings for both leaders were generally low. Some of the biggest shifts toward China came in Canada, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Greece and Indonesia. Pew researchers said views of the U.S. have weakened as tensions with allies grew and recent American military and foreign policy actions hurt perceptions of Washington's role in peace and stability.
