Pentagon pegs US Iran war costs above $47 billion
Why it matters: The new estimate is more than 25% above July’s figure as Republicans face election fallout and higher energy costs.
The US military has spent more than $47 billion on the war in Iran, according to Pentagon data obtained by Reuters, a jump of more than 25% from the $37.5 billion estimate Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave in July. The latest total includes more than $29 billion to replace munitions and over $6 billion for lost equipment and aircraft, including drones. President Donald Trump launched the war with Israel in February and later backed an April ceasefire, which US officials say gave Iran time to restore some defenses and recover missiles and drones from underground sites. Reuters reported the estimate does not clearly include the expected cost of repairing US bases damaged in Iranian strikes.
