Seoul court gives Yoon 18-month suspended sentence
If the ruling is upheld, People Power Party could be required to repay 39.7 billion won in 2022 campaign funds.
The Seoul Central District Court on Monday (27/7) handed former South Korean president Yoon Suk-yeol an 18-month prison term, suspended for three years, in a case involving violations of election law. The judges said Yoon spread false statements during his 2022 presidential campaign, including denying that he had introduced a lawyer to a former tax official and denying that he and Kim Keon Hee had ever met the shaman Jeon Seong-bae. Yoon will appeal. If the ruling becomes final, Yoon's 2022 election victory could be invalidated under law, and the People Power Party would have to return 39.7 billion won in campaign expenses previously reimbursed by the National Election Commission.
