Government targets national rail network to grow to 10,524 km
The Transportation Ministry said train ridership rose 8.8 percent to nearly 550 million in 2025, helped by Trans Sumatera and logistics projects.
The government is targeting the national railway network to expand from 6,927 kilometers now to 10,524 kilometers, including urban rail systems. Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi outlined the plan after a limited meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at Istana Merdeka on Thursday (11/6/2026). The Transportation Ministry said the expansion will focus on strengthening interregional connectivity, lowering goods distribution costs, and easing the burden on road transport. In Sumatera, projects are aimed at freight transport and public mobility; in Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Papua, they will support distribution of key commodities. The projects being pushed include Trans Sumatera, a logistics railway in Kalimantan, completion of operations on Makassar-Parepare, and the development of urban rail services in various regions.
