Government targets solving 70%-80% of waste issues by 2029

The government is preparing about 30 waste-to-energy sites, with three projects due to break ground soon and 12 set to operate in 2028.

The government aims to resolve 70%-80% of the country’s waste problem by 2029 by accelerating processing facilities and promoting waste sorting at the source. Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan said the approach combines penalties for open dumping with incentives to encourage residents to sort and deliver their waste. He said a model like the one in Bantar Gebang cannot continue because penalties are already looming. In Jakarta, DKI Governor Pramono Anung said the capital generates about 9.000 tons of waste per day and is preparing PLTS in Bantar Gebang, Tanjungan, and Sunter. Nationwide, the government is pushing development of Pengolahan Sampah menjadi Energi Listrik under Perpres Nomor 109 Tahun 2025, with about 30 locations planned and some targeted to enter operation in 2028.
