U.S.-Iran talks stall, Islamabad MoU faces expiration
The dispute over timing, the Strait of Hormuz, oil exports and frozen assets is weakening the peace track ahead of 17 August.
Talks between the United States and Iran have again stalled ahead of the expiration of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding on 17 August. According to CNN Indonesia, which quoted a senior Iranian official speaking to Reuters, the two sides have not made progress on the timetable for carrying out the peace commitments. The dispute also covers shipping access in the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions relief so Iran can export oil, and the release of Iranian financial assets. Pakistan, which mediated the agreement, has urged Washington to fully implement the MoU and said dialogue is the only way forward. The deadlock keeps the risk of tensions high along a strategic global energy route.
