The National Park Service has endorsed the location and scale of President Donald Trump’s proposed 250-foot memorial arch at Memorial Circle, even after concluding it would cause adverse effects to historic properties and key Washington sightlines. A report released Friday said the structure would disrupt the visual alignment of landmarks including the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial, and affect dozens of nearby historic sites. Still, the agency argued Memorial Circle remains the historically appropriate location and that moving or shrinking the arch would undermine the project’s purpose. The proposal, near Arlington National Cemetery and Memorial Bridge, has already received initial approval from a federal commission and drawn more than 100,000 public comments.
