PAP votes in 39th leadership team as Wong presses long-term policy choices

Why it matters: The ruling party’s central executive committee shapes succession and strategy after its 65.57% election win.

Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party held its internal election Sunday for the 39th central executive committee, a key leadership body that Prime Minister Lawrence Wong framed as part of party renewal after the 2025 general election. More than 2,000 party cadres typically choose 12 members, with the committee later adding others to reach as many as 18. Wong, the party’s secretary-general, urged members to resist populism and back leaders willing to take politically difficult decisions on issues such as housing, manpower and political salaries. He also pointed to energy security risks, citing Indonesia’s planned gas export cuts and Singapore’s study of nuclear power as a possible long-term option.
