Ousted Ukraine defense minister presses for wartime elections
Why it matters: Ukrainian law bars elections under martial law, making the demand a direct test for Volodymyr Zelensky’s government.
Ukraine’s ousted defense minister called for elections during wartime in a video address on Aug. 18, opening one of the sharpest political challenges yet to President Volodymyr Zelensky since Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion. The former minister argued that “democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia” and urged a legal and safe way to restore the country’s democratic process despite the war. Ukraine has been under martial law since the invasion, and elections are suspended under current law. In the address, he described a “systemic crisis of governance” and linked corruption to damage to the war effort. Zelensky’s office had not responded immediately.
