OpenAI wins U.S. clearance for broad GPT-5.6 release Thursday
What's new: OpenAI is also rolling out GPT-Live voice models globally as Washington builds a formal review process for frontier AI.
OpenAI will broadly release its GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna models on Thursday after U.S. officials cleared the rollout, ending a roughly two-week period in which access was limited to a small group of trusted partners. The company had held back a wider launch at the government's request while testing continued and officials reviewed the models. OpenAI said GPT-5.6 Sol is its strongest model so far, with gains in coding, biology and cybersecurity. On Wednesday, it also began rolling out GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini, voice models that can listen and speak at the same time, to ChatGPT users worldwide. The move comes as the Trump administration pushes developers to submit advanced AI systems for federal evaluation before full release.
