OpenAI eyes 2027 launch for $300-plus puck-sized home AI device

What's new: The screenless device is expected to use cameras, microphones and moving parts to make ChatGPT-style voice interactions feel more lifelike.

OpenAI is developing a puck-sized home device priced above $300 and targeting a 2027 release, according to reports citing people familiar with the plans. The product is described as a screenless smart speaker shaped like a doughnut and small enough to carry around a home with one hand. It is meant to function as an AI-first computer, helping users complete everyday tasks through advanced voice interaction. The device is expected to include microphones, speaker grills, lights, a camera system and other sensors to read its surroundings. It also may use moving components to signal when it is responding, an effort to make it feel more animated than current smart speakers. The hardware is being designed with Jony Ive's LoveFrom studio as OpenAI pushes beyond software and into consumer devices.
