Oleshky ceasefire set for Oct. 29 to open aid and evacuation routes

What's new: The White House said the localized truce would let civilian teams enter the occupied city and help residents leave for Russia or Ukraine.

A localized ceasefire in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky is due to start Oct. 29, opening a window for humanitarian aid and civilian evacuations, the White House said. The statement credited first lady Melania Trump and a representative with working directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership on the terms. Oleshky, across the Dnipro River from Kherson, has about 1,700 to 2,000 residents left, including roughly 50 children, down from about 24,000 before Russia's 2022 invasion. The White House said many remaining residents are elderly and urgently need food, medicine and clean water. Oleshky was heavily damaged in fighting and by flooding after the Kakhovka Dam collapse. Neither Moscow nor Kyiv immediately commented publicly on the arrangement.
