OJK Pushes Flexible Pension Plans for Informal Workers
BPJS Ketenagakerjaan coverage for informal workers was only 17.44% as of July 2026, out of a potential 77.8 million people.
Otoritas Jasa Keuangan is urging the pension industry to prepare more flexible schemes so informal workers can join retirement programs even when their income is irregular. Ogi Prastomiyono, Chief Executive for Insurance, Guarantee, and Pension Oversight at OJK, said in Lombok, Nusa Tenggara Barat, that a rigid monthly contribution model is not suitable for groups such as self-employed workers, athletes and entertainers whose earnings fluctuate. OJK is therefore asking Dana Pensiun Lembaga Keuangan to develop services, including applications, that allow contributions to be paid when participants have income. OJK said old-age protection remains limited because average pension benefits are only around 10-50 percent of final pay. As of July 2026, pension fund assets stood at Rp1.699,9 trillion and are projected to grow 9-11 percent this year.
