NYC mayor weighs Netanyahu arrest during September UN meeting

What's next: City lawyers are reviewing whether New York has any power to detain a visiting foreign leader at the UN.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said his administration is reviewing whether the city could detain Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he travels to New York for the United Nations General Assembly in September. In a New York Times interview, Mamdani said Netanyahu “belongs in The Hague” and called him a war criminal, citing the International Criminal Court case tied to Israel’s war in Gaza. Mamdani said he is in active talks with the city’s Law Department over whether he can direct the NYPD to act against a foreign leader. Netanyahu has rejected the allegations, and Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon blasted the remarks. US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz also argued the mayor lacks legal authority.
