NYC mayor weighs arrest of Netanyahu at September UN meeting
What's new: Zohran Mamdani said city lawyers are reviewing whether New York could act on the ICC warrant if the Israeli leader visits.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he is reviewing whether his administration could arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he comes to the city for the U.N. General Assembly in September. In an interview on The New York Times' “The Interview” podcast, Mamdani said an “active conversation” with the city’s legal department is examining what New York law would allow. The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in 2024 over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Palestine. Netanyahu, who has often attended the annual U.N. gathering, dismissed the threat in a radio interview and accused Mamdani of supporting Hamas, which the mayor denied.
