Nvidia puts $3.5 billion into MediaTek to deepen AI chip ties

Why it matters: The deal extends Nvidia’s data-center standards into customer-built chips as MediaTek pushes beyond smartphones.

Nvidia is investing $3.5 billion in Taiwanese chip designer MediaTek through bonds convertible into shares, expanding a partnership centered on AI data-center hardware. The companies said MediaTek will use Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion and newly introduced NVHBM technology to help components communicate more smoothly in data centers. The agreement strengthens Nvidia’s push to keep its hardware platform at the core of AI infrastructure, even when customers use chips designed in-house or by partners. For MediaTek, the deal supports its effort to diversify beyond smartphones and compete more directly with Broadcom and Marvell Technology in custom data-center silicon.
