North Sumatra seeds clouds over Danau Toba as smoke cuts visibility

BBMKG reported visibility fell to 1-4 km, while PM2.5 levels were recorded at moderate to unhealthy levels.

The North Sumatera provincial government has begun cloud seeding to ease imported haze that has blanketed the region in recent days. The cloud-sowing operation started over the Danau Toba area on Thursday and will be expanded gradually to other parts of North Sumatera. Governor Bobby Afif Nasution is also coordinating with the South Sumatera provincial government to prepare a dry ice option if efforts to trigger rain fail in all areas. BBMKG Wilayah I Medan said smoke was detected across North Sumatera, although satellite imagery on 13 October found no hot spots in the province. Observations from the Aek Godang and Silangit meteorological stations at 10.00 WIB on 14 October showed visibility dropping to 1 to 4 kilometers. PM2.5 concentrations were recorded in the moderate to unhealthy category.
