North Korea fires at least 2 ballistic missiles into Sea of Japan

What's new: One missile flew more than 900 km, prompting a joint U.S.-South Korea-Japan analysis of a possible irregular trajectory.

North Korea fired at least two ballistic missiles from its interior on Monday morning, with one traveling more than 900 kilometers before falling into the Sea of Japan, according to Japanese and South Korean authorities. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said several missiles were detected from the Pyongyang area around 9:20 a.m. Japan's Defense Ministry said the first missile flew about 220 kilometers at an altitude of roughly 20 kilometers, while the second reached about 70 kilometers and flew farther than 910 kilometers. South Korea convened an emergency security meeting after the launches. The tests came days after Pyongyang and Seoul both publicized new missile capabilities amid rising tension following a landmine blast along the Demilitarized Zone.
