Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ shot across 6 countries with 2.1M feet of IMAX film
What's new: The production also used a seaworthy Viking longship from Norway and built California sets for locations it could not film on site.
Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic “The Odyssey” was filmed across six countries and used 2.1 million feet of IMAX film, underscoring the scale of the Homer adaptation. Production took place in Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Scotland and the United States, while additional sets were built in California for scenes that could not be shot on location. Nolan and production designer Ruth De Jong spent months researching sites to depict Troy’s coast, the Cyclops cave, Hades, the islands of Calypso and Circe, and Ithaca. The filmmakers also used both traditional IMAX cameras and newer IMAX film models, with rolls replaced about every three minutes. Odysseus’ ship was played by Draken, a seagoing longship from Stavanger, Norway, whose real crew joined the production.
