Newcastle hires Matthias Jaissle, 38, to replace Eddie Howe

What's next: Jaissle's first competitive match is Aug. 23 against Liverpool after Newcastle finished 12th and lost key players this summer.

Newcastle United appointed Matthias Jaissle as head coach, turning to the 38-year-old German to replace Eddie Howe less than three weeks before the Premier League season starts. Jaissle arrived from Saudi club Al-Ahli after a delay in finalizing his release paperwork and has already joined Newcastle's preseason camp in La Manga, Spain. He previously coached Red Bull Salzburg, winning a domestic double in his first season and leading the Austrian side into the Champions League knockout stage. Newcastle is betting Jaissle can start a new cycle after a disappointing 12th-place finish and the departures of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes. His first official game in charge is at home to Liverpool on Aug. 23.
