Nepal flash flood leaves 5 missing, forces 95 rescues in Gorkha
What's new: A landslide blocked the Budhi Gandaki River, washing out bridges, hydropower sites and homes as helicopters evacuated stranded residents and tourists.
A flash flood along Nepal's Budhi Gandaki River left five people missing and triggered at least 95 rescues in central Gorkha district, as authorities rushed helicopters, troops and relief supplies into cut-off mountain villages. Officials said a landslide near Chumchure blocked the river before floodwaters surged downstream on Sunday, destroying or damaging houses, farms, five bridges and parts of three hydropower construction sites. More than 650 people were affected, with some settlements reachable only by air. No deaths had been reported as of Monday, and officials said early warnings helped many residents move to higher ground before the river rose sharply.
