Navy admiral, attorney head to June 23 runoff for Mace seat
What's next: The winner will face a tough climb in South Carolina's 1st District, a seat Republicans have held for all but one term since 1981.
Retired Navy Vice Adm. Nancy Lacore and attorney Mac Deford advanced Tuesday to a Democratic runoff for South Carolina's 1st Congressional District after no candidate won a majority in a crowded primary. The June 23 runoff will decide who takes on Republicans for the House seat vacated by Rep. Nancy Mace, who left to run for governor. Fox News reported Lacore pitched herself as a military veteran and civil servant after her removal from the Navy by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. South Carolina's 1st has been a reliable Republican district for decades, with Democrat Joe Cunningham the only exception since 1981.
