NATO moves to modernize nuclear forces and planning capacity

Why it matters: The step reinforces the alliance’s deterrence posture as ministers call nuclear forces the top guarantee of allied security.

NATO ministers agreed in Brussels to upgrade the alliance’s nuclear capabilities and bolster its nuclear planning capacity, marking a fresh push to strengthen deterrence. The decision came from the Nuclear Planning Group, NATO’s senior body on nuclear deterrence, whose members include every ally except France. In a statement, the group said ministers would keep enhancing NATO’s nuclear deterrence mission by modernizing capabilities, improving planning and adapting the alliance to protect its security interests. The statement also reiterated that NATO’s strategic nuclear forces remain the “supreme guarantee” of allied security and underpin the alliance’s extended deterrence architecture.
