Nancy Mace finishes 5th in South Carolina GOP governor primary
What's next: Mace backed Alan Wilson for the June 23 runoff against Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette after her loss.
Rep. Nancy Mace placed a distant fifth in South Carolina's Republican primary for governor on Tuesday, abruptly dimming the prospects of one of the state's most volatile political figures. The three-term congresswoman had tried to rebuild ties with President Donald Trump after criticizing him over the Jan. 6 attack, but her campaign struggled to raise money, had little television presence and relied heavily on social media. In the closing days, Mace pushed a proposal to bar people not born in the United States from holding office or serving as judges, while questioning rival Rom Reddy's fitness because he is a naturalized citizen. After conceding, she endorsed state Attorney General Alan Wilson in the June 23 runoff against Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette.
