MUI urges DPR to bar LGBT practices in law after congress

MUI says the draft bill and academic paper are ready and will be sent to the President and DPR after the congress closes.

The Indonesian Ulema Council urged the DPR to quickly draft a law banning LGBT practices after the issue was discussed at the VIII Indonesian Islamic Congress in Jakarta on Friday. MUI Chairman Anwar Iskandar said LGBT practices demean human dignity and threaten national resilience. MUI Deputy Chairman Muhammad Cholil Nafis said the academic paper and draft bill on criminal sanctions for LGBT had been prepared, discussed on July 24-26, then would be declared at the closing before being submitted to the President and DPR. According to Cholil, the criminal provisions target conduct such as indecent acts, same-sex intimacy, and open campaigns in public spaces and on social media, not sexual orientation alone.
