MUI prepares draft on criminalizing LGBT for July 24-26 congress
The academic text will be refined with participant input before being submitted to DPR RI as material for drafting a bill.
Majelis Ulama Indonesia is preparing an academic paper to push for rules that would criminalize LGBT and will discuss it at the VIII Indonesian Islamic Community Congress in Jakarta on July 24-26, 2026. MUI Legal Affairs head Wahiduddin Adams said the congress forum will be used to strengthen the substance of the draft through input from participants. Secretary General MUI Amirsyah Tambunan said the document is being prepared as an initial step toward a bill on tackling or handling LGBT. Once completed, the paper will be submitted to DPR RI as material for consideration in drafting regulations. MUI said the move responds to public aspirations and that moral appeals have not been effective. MUI said the drafting will also involve experts in religion, psychology, psychiatry and medicine.
