MUI seeks to carry KUII VIII recommendations into policy
MUI also bars its officials from issuing controversial fatwas or statements on their own, outside the meeting process.
The Indonesian Ulema Council asked that the results of the 8th Indonesian Muslim Congress not stop as a document, but be carried through until they shape public policy. At the closing of KUII VIII in Jakarta on Sunday night, Masykuri Abdillah, deputy chairman of MUI's Advisory Council, urged the congress recommendations to be delivered to policymakers, implementers and the wider Muslim community. He also pressed MUI's Legal Commission and Assessment Commission to track and evaluate regulations issued by the executive and legislature. According to Masykuri, MUI should act as a civil society element with constructive criticism. Internally, he reminded officials not to issue fatwas or controversial statements individually. Masykuri also proposed a Friday sermon handbook containing the essence of the congress results and called for the Danantara Syariah discourse to be reviewed.
