MUI deputy chairman urges corruptors to repent, return loot
Anwar Abbas said repentance is not enough unless all proceeds from corruption are returned to the rightful owners.
Majelis Ulama Indonesia Deputy Chairman Anwar Abbas urged corruption offenders to repent immediately and return all assets obtained unlawfully to the rightful owners. In a statement in Jakarta quoted Friday, he said corruption, or ghulul, is an act of oppression and a major sin because it harms the public and violates the ban on taking property that is not one’s right. Anwar cited the Quran and hadith to describe the severity of punishment for corruptors in the afterlife, including an image of offenders carrying their corrupt wealth on the Day of Judgment. He also quoted Surah Al-Kahf verse 29 and hadith narrated by Bukhari, Muslim, and Imam Muslim. He said the way to avoid punishment is sincere repentance, along with returning the proceeds of corruption.
