Muhammadiyah urges action against forest fire culprits in Sumatera-Kalimantan
It also called for a review of business permits and for protection of vulnerable groups in haze-hit areas.
PP Muhammadiyah urged the government and law enforcement to take firm action against the culprits behind forest and land fires, including corporations, parties suspected of shielding violations, and anyone who obstructs law enforcement. The appeal was delivered in a statement dated 20 October 2026 signed by Chairman Haedar Nashir and Secretary Muhammad Suyuti. Muhammadiyah highlighted the karhutla in Sumatera and Kalimantan because it caused environmental damage, health disruptions, education setbacks, loss of livelihoods for residents and effects on Indonesia’s image in neighboring countries. The organization also called for a comprehensive review of forest and land management policies, including permits and business practices, as well as a rapid, broad and coordinated emergency response. Health services, basic needs and protection for children, the elderly, pregnant women, people with disabilities and other vulnerable residents were said to be priorities.
