Mount Bromo erupts, ash plume reaches 500 meters
PVMBG barred residents and tourists from entering a 1-kilometer radius of the active crater because of the risk of sudden phreatic eruptions.
Mount Bromo in Probolinggo regency, East Java, erupted on Thursday at 17.11 WIB, sending an ash plume about 500 meters above the summit. Budi Marwanto, an observer at the Mount Bromo monitoring post, reported gray ash of light to thick intensity drifting west. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 23 mm and a duration of 46 seconds. By about 18.43 WIB, ash smoke was still visible to the west, with no significant follow-up eruption tremor. Bromo remained at Level II, or Waspada. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation asked residents, traders, tourists and climbers to stay outside a 1-kilometer radius of the active crater and watch for sudden phreatic eruptions.
