Moscow restaurant bombing kills 3 and injures 21 near Stalin tower

What's new: Russian authorities said the blast came from a homemade bomb as heavily armed officers sealed off Kudrinskaya Square.

A bomb blast near an upscale Italian restaurant in central Moscow killed three people and injured at least 21 on Saturday evening, Russian authorities said. The explosion hit near Balzi Rossi at Kudrinskaya Square shortly before 8 p.m., in one of Moscow’s Stalin-era skyscrapers. Russia’s Anti-Terrorism Committee said a woman carrying a homemade explosive device tried to enter the restaurant but was stopped by a security guard. The woman, the guard and a customer were killed in the blast, authorities said. Video released by state media showed armed law enforcement officers at the scene as the area was closed to the public. Officials did not identify the victims or assign blame. Kommersant reported the bomb may have been detonated remotely.
