More than 50 arson attacks hit southern Thailand, injuring 2

What's new: Authorities imposed an overnight curfew in Narathiwat after 51 coordinated attacks damaged telecom towers and government sites.

More than 50 coordinated arson and incendiary attacks struck Thailand's insurgency-hit south late Saturday, injuring two civilians and damaging government and commercial property. The military's Internal Security Operations Command said 51 incidents unfolded between about 8 p.m. and midnight across Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani, with most in Narathiwat province. Targets included a local government office, telecommunications towers, electrical poles, a 7-Eleven store and a stolen vehicle that was later found abandoned. Authorities imposed a curfew in Narathiwat overnight and warned residents not to touch suspicious objects. No group immediately claimed responsibility. The attacks came as Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and cabinet members are due in southern Songkhla next week.
